With just a few months to go until Bethesda’s latest space adventure Starfield crash lands onto our screens, some new information has come to light.
Courtesy of an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Howard spoke more about how the RPG’s character creation system will work. More specifically, how it will work when players are hours into the game.
Starfield Character Creation Has Roleplay In Mind
In the interview, Howard was asked how a character’s background and traits have evolved from the systems created in such games as Fallout 3 and Skyrim.
“We’ve done a number of games over the decades that have various character systems, and I think we’ve learned a lot in terms of ‘how does it feel when you start a game? What are those first choices like before you understand what the actual rules of the game are?’ That’s always a trick to get right,” he explained.
Not only that but he also reveals how the team made sure to think about how your character will change the further though the game you go.
“And then ‘how much depth does it have if you’re playing for 20 hours, or 50 hours, or 100 hours, or 500 hours?’” He says. “I think we’ve hit a real sweetspot with Starfield, of giving you that flavor right out of the gate, where you are gonna pick some starting skills, with your background.
But that also has flavor – people wanna roleplay. They don’t wanna just see it as a list of numbers.”
Not Just About Stats
Whereas most RPGs focus on levelling up a character by levelling up the stats attributed to them, it seems our characters in Starfield will grow alongside the story. How this will be implemented, however, remains to be seen.
