Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills suffered a horrific injury in their game against the Cincinnati Bengals in week 17 of the NFL’s regular season. Hamlin collapsed on the field after a collision with a Bengals player.
The incident happened during the first quarter of the Bengals-Bills matchup on Monday Night Football. After receiving a 13-yard catch, Bengals wideout Tee Higgins led with his right shoulder to lay a hit on the defensive back in an attempt to gain some extra yards. Hamlin managed to wrap his arm around Higgins and bring him down. After the play, Hamlin stood and adjusted his helmet before collapsing on the field.
The officials quickly waved their hands to call for medical support to aid the injured player. After a while, an ambulance was rushed to the scene, and he had to receive CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) as they found out that Hamlin was not breathing, although he still had a pulse. This dreadful injury shook both teams‘ players, and they started to pray for Hamlin.
Hamlin was transported to a Cincinnati Hospital, and the game was postponed indefinitely by the NFL. In the wake of this horrific incident, former NFL player Ryan Clark delivered a passionate speech on ESPN.
Ryan Clark delivers a moving speech after Damar Hamlin’s injury
ESPN analyst Ryan Clark joined Sportscenter with Scott Van Pelt after the injury to talk about the ‘ugly side of football’ that nobody wants to see. Clark talked about how the dreams of the young man, Damar Hamlin, quickly became a nightmare.
“I think the first thing, this is about Damar Hamlin. It’s about a young man at 24 years old that was living his dream, that a few hours ago was getting ready to play the biggest game of his NFL career, and there’s probably nowhere else in the world he wanted to be. And now, he fights for his life,” Clark said about Damar Hamlin’s injury.
The former NFL safety talked about the ugly side of the game that nobody wants to see. “Tonight we got to see a side of football that is extremely ugly,” Clark said. “A side of football that no one ever wants to see, and never wants to admit exists. This isn’t about a football player. This is about a human, This is about a brother, This is about a son, This is about a friend, This is about someone that is loved by so many that you have to watch go through this.”
Clark also shared some insights from the time he dealt with an injury during his playing time. He also mentioned his own experience when one of his teammates came to visit him. They came to the hospital bed and just cried for days, and now Hamlin’s team has to deal with that with no answers.
Damar Hamlin was a second-year defensive back for the Buffalo Bills. The Pittsburgh product was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft and signed a four-year rookie contract with the Bills.
