Early life and education
Roger was raised in Los Angeles alongside his several brothers and sisters, by their father who was a journalist and their mother who was a nurse. He became interested in acting while attending a local high school, but remained focused on his education.

Upon matriculation in 1960, Roger enrolled at a college from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre in 1964, and then focused on acting.
Career as an actor
He made his debut film appearance (uncredited) in 1964, when he portrayed Jackson in the war comedy film “Ensign Pulver”, written and directed by Joshua Logan and which starred Robert Walker Jr., Burl Ives and Waiter Matthau – the film follows Ensign who ends up on a tropical island with his captain after their ship is destroyed in a storm.
In the same year Roger made his debut TV series appearance, when he guest starred as Marvin Grogan in the episode “The Girl Reporter” of the critically acclaimed comedy family fantasy series “Bewitched” which was created by Sol Saks and starred Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York and Dick Sargent – the series won 13 awards and was nominated for 32 others including four Golden Globes while it aired from 1964 to 1972. Roger appeared as Norman in the episode “Look Who’s a Sailor” of the comedy series “The Baileys of Balboa” while he also guest starred in the episodes “The Christmas Show” and “The Green Couch” of the comedy series “The Bing Crosby Show”.
In 1965, he was invited to play Private Swensholm, one of the lead characters in the adventure war movie “None But the Brave”, which was directed by the famous musician Frank Sinatra who also starred in it – it follows a group of Marines who, after surviving a shipwreck during World War II, end up on an island occupied by a few Japanese soldiers.
Roger went on to appear in the episode “The Calf Women” of the western series “Rawhide”, played Carter Case in the episode “Divorce: Mother-in-Law Style” of the comedy series “The Mothers-In-Law”, and was then cast to play Donald Maxwell in the family western film “Smith!” which starred Glenn Ford, Nancy Olson and Dean Jagger in 1969.
Two of Roger’s final roles before he decided to retire from acting were in the episode “Pioneer Pluck” of the western series “Death Valley Days” in which he played Frank Harris in 1970, and in the comedy movie “Play It As It Lays” which starred Tuesday Weld and Anthony Perkins in 1972.
The movie “Midnight Cowboy”
The director of the drama movie “Midnight Cowboy” – John Schlesinger – wanted to cast Roger in the lead role after the two were introduced by actor, film writer and producer William Inge. John told the film’s producer Jerome Hellman about Roger, but after the two met, Jerome decided that Roger wasn’t the right man for the role, which eventually went to Jon Voight.
“Midnight Cowboy” became a huge hit, as it won 28 awards including three Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium – it was also nominated for 16 other awards.
Love life and wife
Roger is quite a secretive man who doesn’t like to share details of his love life with the public, but it is known that he hasn’t married and doesn’t have any kids. He met a girl not long after he quit acting, and the two dated for many years – they were often seen walking hand in hand in the streets of Los Angeles by Roger’s fans.
